“ | They never come back... as... BOYS! | ” |
~ The Coachman's most famous quote to Honest John Worthington Foulfellow and Gideon about his crimes. |
The Coachman is one of the main antagonists of Disney's Pinocchio. A mysterious man who owns the enigmatic Pleasure Island, he abducts children and allows them to perform naughty acts on the Island, where they are eventually turned into donkeys, which he can then sell into slavery and labor.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- While not anymore influential or powerful than any of the other villains in the movie, the Coachman does prove himself to be the most heinous of the bunch. Unlike all of the other villains, who at worse only wanted to kill or con Pinocchio, the Coachman resorts to subjecting numerous children to a fate worse than death, permanently transforming them into donkeys.
- The movie implies that the Coachman had amassed great wealth just by selling the transformed children to the unpleasant working facilities.
- The movie also implies that he keeps the donkeys that can still talk as his own personal slaves, given how he uses and whips a set of donkeys to pull his carriage.
- Additionally, when Honest John tells him of the concerns of his deal with him and Gideon about Pleasure Island, he makes it a point that he never once got in trouble with the law, and likely never will.
- He also makes an extremely creepy smile in this scene that implies that he isn't human, especially since he only has three fingers on either hand.
- Furthermore, Stromboli is bog-standard and Honest John, Gideon, and Monstro all suffer from Fridge Horror. In fact, the former two's Fridge Horror is based on whether they played a huge role in carrying out the Coachman's abominations in the first place. Monstro's is obviously whether he swallowed two or twenty ships alive (and whether the school of fish he greedily narfed down were anthropomorphic like Jiminy and Honest John).
- The Coachman also has the most resources out of all of the movie's villains, as he owns an enormous theme park with seemingly unlimited supplies that can turn naughty children into donkeys. Along with that, he has numerous ape-like minions.
- All scenes that include the Coachman or Pleasure Island are played very seriously, and are often deemed some of the most terrifying moments in the history of Disney animation.
- The Coachman is also always portrayed to be a very heinous being whose actions even terrify Honest John and Gideon, best illustrated when he gives off his infamous evil grin to them.
