Death, also known by his disguises Varney and The Alchemist, is the overarching antagonist of Netflix's Castlevania. He is an ancient elemental spirit that feeds on the death of all life. In the fourth and final season, he attempts to resurrect Dracula and drive him insane so that he could feed on his countless deaths and become omnipotent.
As his true self and Varney, he is voiced by Malcom McDowell, while his Alchemist form was voiced by Christine Adams.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- He is the most evil character in the series, as any other villains in the series either have redeeming qualities, fail the heinous standards, have moral agency issues, or lack sufficient characterization. None of that applies to Death. Unlike his mainstream counterpart, this version of Death shows no true loyalty towards Dracula.
- He is easily the most heinous villain in the series as he attempted to resurrect Dracula without his sanity to spread death on a global scale so that he would become omnipotent.
- He is one of the most intelligent characters in the series and is highly manipulative as he used seemingly unrelated aliases to hide his true nature from everyone without suspicion and only revealed himself once his plan became seemingly unstoppable.
- Nobody else involved in his plot to resurrect Dracula knew that he would be resurrected without his sanity, with the possible exception of Saint Germain, who he had manipulated into resurrecting Dracula and Lisa together as a Rebis. This means he manipulated not only Saint Germain, but everyone involved in the resurrection of Dracula.
- It's worth noting that because of his ability to shapeshift and being extremely manipulative, it's possible (but not confirmed) that Death may have manipulated the Bishop into burning Lisa at the stake, kicking off the events of the series.
- He is extremely powerful, arguably more powerful than Dracula himself, and possibly the most powerful being in the Netflix series. Trevor Belmont believed that he would not survive his battle with him, and was only able to kill him using a divine weapon, a trait not shared by any other villian. Also unlike other villains, he has full access to the Infinite Corridor, allowing him to enter and exit other worlds at will, making him at least a multiverse-level threat.
- Since he spent most of his screen time as Varney, a highly comedic vampire with no real powers or hints about his true identity, his reveal as Death is very shocking.
