Luz: But, why? Why go through all this?
Belos: I'll do anything to save humanity from evil.
Luz: No... [...] You're evil!
Belos: ...Can't reason with crazy.
~ Belos explains his motives for trying to commit genocide on witches.

Philip Wittebane, later known as Emperor Belos, is the main antagonist of the Disney animated series The Owl House.

He's a human witch hunter from 17th century Gravesfield who got transported to Demon Realm while chasing after his older brother Caleb and a witch Evelyn. After an encounter with them led to Caleb's death at his hands, Philip assumed the new identity of Belos and, with guidance from the Collector, became the ruler of Boiling Isles, lying to its people about giving them a paradise while secretly planning to kill them.

He was voiced by Matthew Rhys and by Alex Lawther as his younger self.

Actions and Characteristics[]

  • He's overall a dark counterpart to Luz Noceda: while Luz was able to differ fantasy from real and became more mature, Belos refused to see error of his ways in long run and was even aware that all he did was horrible but refused to actually admit it. Every redeeming quality he might have was thrown away in the end and the narrative treats him as someone who just pretends to be good, but is truly evil.
  • While his despicable actions and personality make him far from a Magnificent Baddie, he's manipulative enough to be one, with his most dangerous weapon being his own words: he successfully uses his calm nature to manipulate people into doing dirty work for him and worshipping him, changed his identity after "the name Philip was run out of too many towns" to become Belos, with few people on the Isles knowing his true nature.
  • When possessing the Titan's heart, Belos is one of the strongest characters in the entire series, only weaker than the Titan-powered Luz (and the Titan himself by extension) and possibly the Archivists. He covered the entire Boiling Isles in huge amounts of his green goo, which he also can morph into monstrous forms.
  • He has the highest on-screen kill count than any other antagonist in the show and is the most heinous due to planning a genocide on an entire race while also destroying numerous and killing hundreds of his brother's clones.
  • He's the sole reason why the Boiling Isles is the place it is today, making him one of the most influential villains in the entire series, if not the most.
  • While it's true that the Archivists rival him in power, influence and deaths caused, Belos still stands out on his own as the Archivists are no longer around for the main events of the series and don't play a role in the main storyline. Additionally, they are equal in terms of everything, so Belos isn't outdone by them.
