NOTE: This page pertains to only the villainous main timeline version of Gilgamesh and not his heroic counterpart from Fate/Grand Order.

Hero of Justice? A world where no one is hurt? Don’t be absurd. “Humanity” is the name for an animal that cannot find joy in life without sacrifice. The pretty lie that is “equality” is nonsense spouted by weaklings who cannot look upon the darkness. Nothing but an excuse to cover up life’s ugliness.

King Gilgamesh also known as the King of Heroes and the Wedge of Heaven is the secondary antagonist of the visual novel franchise Fate/stay night, serving as the main antagonist of Unlimited Blade Works.

He was once the ancient King of Uruk, who upon his death, became the very first Heroic Spirit. With the help of Kirei Kotomine, he seeks to use the Holy Grail for his own gain of using it to wipe out most of humanity, as he deemed the modern world to be overly filled with useless people. However, unlike the tragic and remorseful Zouken Matou or the more neutral Kirei Kotomine, Gilgamesh is far more malevolent and more consistent in his villainy.

He is voiced by Tomozaku Seki in the Japanese version and by Grant George in the 2006 anime and later David Vincent in the English dub.

Actions & Characteristics[]

  • He is one of the most influential villains in the series, as he is the first Heroic Spirit, making him responsible for why most of the conflict happened in the series and as well as being responsible for most of the characters hardships, and also helping to cause Big Bad Kirei Kotomine into becoming the monster he is today, causing despair and horror throughout the entire series. He also serves as one of the gravest threats in the entire series as even Heroic Spirits like Saber quake in his presence with fear.
  • He is one of the most powerful villains in Fate/stay night, as he was once known to have conquered many countries when he was still alive and when he becomes a Heroic Spirit, has the power to summon many Noble Phantasms that no other person can possess and can crush a Reality Marble with ease using Eu. Summoning wealth and resources isn’t a problem for him. He is also very highly intelligent, as his sense are far above an average person, and he is also able to manipulate anyone or attract people to his side with his vast charisma and as well as being able to quickly find out his opponent's attacks. All of this makes him nearly impossible to be defeated.
  • While he isn't without redeeming qualities with a code of honor where he respects his enemies and a small amount of remorse for corrupting Saber, he is still the evilest antagonist in the entire series as his crimes go far lower than any villain had ever tried to do and any possible Freudian excuse or tragic past is completely nullified by how much suffering he has caused in the entire series.
  • He alongside Zouken Matou is the most heinous character in the entire work. Long ago, he launched the world in an era of destruction and despair and committed many atrocities such as mass torture and murder. When he is transformed into a Heroic Spirit, his heinousness only continues further, as according to Saber, he is a rapist. Even after his defeat, he returns to use the Holy Grail to cleanse humanity by wiping out the people he deemed to be useless that are being overly fitted in the modern world. He also uses Shinji Matou as a vessel for the Grail, which causes him to suffer a brutal fate and manages to nearly kill off the rest of the cast with the intention to cause them pain for his own pleasure and as well as being responsible for bringing Kirei into embracing his villainy and causing many of the negative events of the series as well as standing out with his own impressive rap sheet of horrific crimes.
  • Related to the above, he has committed the most depraved and monstrous crimes in the series even when he was still alive, and being a rapist is also very unique as well. In addition, Gilgamesh assisted most of his Masters with their malicious crimes expressing no regret over these actions and even his own, showing only sick pleasure and glee from them.
  • While there are other villains that are more powerful and influential than him like Zouken Matou and Kirei Kotomine, the former while a far worse monster than him, is still depicted to have a sympathetic death in which he feels remorse for his actions when he remembers his true love, and the latter is a tragic and sympathetic anti-villain who has some standards as well as being genuinely affable. Thus, Gilgamesh is the Ultimate Evil of the Fate series due to never redeeming himself and his huge power, influence, and heinousness out of anyone in the franchise.
