“ Grandpa's strict liquid diet keeps him as fresh as a rose. Every spring, the Atlas Rendering Company used to throw a big barbecue for Grandpa. Oh, he was the master. He was the one and only. He showed us all the business. We was raised in meat. Except after the glory, here comes the shame. Atlas went for automation, they electrified cages, the cold steal shoots, the air powered hit hammers. That drove Grandpa crazy seeing things he doesn't like. ” ~ Drayton Sawyer to Vanita Brock on his grandfather's actions.
Grandpa Sawyer is the overarching antagonist of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. He is the oldest member of the Sawyer Family and its patriarch who was named “the best in the business” and is responsible for his horrid family’s actions.
He is portrayed by John Dugan in the first film and Ken Evert in the second film.
Actions & Characteristics[]
- He is easily the most heinous villain in the franchise, as he was a murderous and sadistic serial killer who was named “the best of the business”, so he has killed and cannibalized thousands of innocents for over 100 years and he is also a serial rapist as he impregnated his own daughter with all of his seven children, and he raised all of them into the cannibalistic murderers they are today, making him responsible for all of their heinous crimes.
- He is the most irredeemable and evil villain, as he not only is a sadistic mass murderer who has murdered thousands of innocents over 100 years, but is a twisted sexual deviant who has sexually abused and impregnated his own daughter, causing her to have all 7 of her children, which lead to her castrating him and making her go sterile. He has also abused and gaslighted his own children, like Leatherface and Drayton Sawyer, into becoming serial cannibals, who also horribly torture others. He is irredeemably evil, being a sadistic and cannibalistic mass murderer who has racked up the deaths of innocents, out of sadism and lacks any remorse for his actions, and he also lacks any of the redeeming traits his other family members have and has a full-on moral agency, being fully aware of the pain and horror going on, and simply doesn’t care about it at all. In fact, his only mitigating factor is that he is not sufficiently characterized enough.
- When it really comes down to it, he is the most influential villain in the entire film series, so far for really a number of reasons, as he is responsible for abusing and corrupting his family into becoming the cannibalistic monsters they are today, making him responsible for all their horrifying crimes. Even after years, Leatherface and Drayton Sawyer would still carry on his sinister and monstrous legacy, by murdering individuals. This would result in Sally Hardesty falling victim to them and Drayton Sawyer enabling the rest of his families' crimes, after Grandpa become too old, which, overall, set up the events of the film series.
