Judge Claude Frollo is the main antagonist of the 1996 Disney animated film The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
He was famously voiced by the late Tony Jay.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- As the Minister of Justice, Frollo has access to a ton of resources and rules Paris with an iron fist.
- Frollo is the most heinous character in the duology of films who desired to purge France of its Romani population, only growing worse as the film continued.
- He displays manipulative traits such as his grooming of Quasimodo into believing that he was a monster. Even after his death, the influence he left on Quasimodo was still felt in the sequel. Another instance is him tricking Quasimodo into leading him to the Court of Miracles.
- Despite being a mere human, Frollo is pretty strong for his age best exemplified with him slicing gargoyles in half with his sword and can be on a near equal footing with Quasimodo.
- He burns a majority of Paris during his massive search for Esmeralda, possibly imprisoning and/or killing many innocents. While capturing many Romani citizens (including children) during the search for Esmeralda, he offers them payment in silver coins in exchange for Esmeralda's whereabouts, only for the captured Romani to silently refuse his offer; this prompts Frollo to have them arrested for treason and locked up in custody.
- He even directly attempts to burn an innocent family alive, after lying to them and pretending to put them on house arrest, simply because he falsely concludes they are traitors on the flabby grounds that they've given shelter to Romani travelers in the past. While the family survives, he still ends up burning down their house.
Trivia[]
- Only the Disney version of Frollo is an Ultimate Evil as his counterparts from the original novel and musical are Anti-Villains and thus can't qualify for the title, while the one from the 1986 Burbank Australia release, while antagonistic, is only normal evil.
