Judge Holden is the main antagonist of the novel Blood Meridian.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- While Blood Meridian is a bleak work with the "heroes" of the novel being despicable human beings, Judge Holden is the most evil character in the story who can be debated to either be the physical manifestation of evil itself, or the Devil. In the novel, he commits several acts of evil ranging from murder, animal cruelty, implied pedophilia, etc.
- He is the most intelligent character in the story with the ability to speak several languages and is "cultured." He spends some of his time waxing philosophical discussions with the Glanton Gang.
- Judge Holden is physically very strong being capable of carrying a howitzer under one arm and snapping an arm without issue. He even bashes a man's head in so hard, blood gushes from the wounds.
- He corrupts the Glanton Gang throughout the novel.
- Judge Holden implies that he is immortal. The final words of the novel notes this.
