The Kandarian Demon, also known as "The Evil" and "The Force", also called "Rotten Apple Head" and "The Evil Force", is the main antagonist of The Evil Dead franchise. It is an evil supernatural entity that was the living spirit of the accursed spellbook known as the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis. The Evil Force later took over as leader of the Deadites Army (also called the Army of Darkness) during its war against mankind in the 14th century.
It is the arch-nemesis of Ash Williams.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- The Kandarian Demon is very powerful in that it can control a variety of beings at one time, and it is also capable of turning ordinary people into violent Deadites. It can manipulate the physical environment, distort time and space--which can be seen in the manner in which Ash is propelled backward in time--and at times mobilize armies of the dead. Its power is almost unlimited when unleashed, which makes it a universal threat, even more so when it gains enough energy from the Necronomicon and its victims. The Dark Ones had to imprison the Kandarian Demon due to the potential it carried for world destruction.
- The Kandarian Demon is considered the most dangerous and eviles entity in the whole franchise. Its motivation is drawn not only from a need to dominate or destroy but by a wanton, cruel desire to inflict as much suffering as possible. Whether through possession, mutilation, or psychological torment, the demon's intent always boils down to being truly malicious. The possession of Cheryl and the subsequent physical and emotional torture she endures epitomizes its capability to push the boundaries of evil. This is further driven home by the myriad murders, acts of sexual violence, and gruesome desecration of bodies it performs.
- The Kandarian Demon has a huge sphere of influence. Since it ultimately controls every Deadite as part of a hivemind, making it responsible for their actions throughout the entire franchise. Its reach goes beyond life and death, time, and even dimensions, as witnessed in Army of Darkness. It manipulates the victims with illusions, possessions, and time travel-all to warp reality to its whims. Conjured via the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, it rapidly spreads its influence once it has gained a foothold, overtaking people, objects, and even elements of the natural world, like trees, to commit acts of violence.
- Kandarian Demon is not a mindless entity simply because it is cunning, calculated, and understands human psychology. The demon manipulates the victim with their weaknesses, taunts them, and invites innocent people, dropping their guard for a false sense of security, to unleash torment. In The Evil Dead, it often taunts Ash by acting as if it is releasing the possessed victims from its clutches to strike once again, showing Ash how the demon is a master manipulator. This is further proved by how the creation of Evil Ash went on to lead an army in Army of Darkness, showing well the demon could coordinate strategic attacks.
