“ | But... the future refused to change. | ” |
~ The message shown if the player loses to Lavos when facing it outside of the Ocean Palace encounter, allowing it to destroy the world. |
“ | The Devourer of Time will begin to consume all space-time continua... despair and hatred... to return all things to nothingness... that is what it desires. | ” |
~ Belthasar describing the true nature of Lavos after it became the Time Devourer. |
Lavos (in Japanese: ラヴォス Ravosu) is the overarching antagonist of the Chrono franchise. An alien parasite which crash-landed on Earth in 65,000,000 B.C., Lavos has three different forms. The first form is the outer shell, which resembles the Peluda, a mythical beast in French mythology. The second form consists of a large humanoid form with two arms. The third and final form is Lavos Core, consisting of three parts: a humanoid center, and two floating 'bits'. Apparently, the absolute core of Lavos is one of these bits, since it can revive its other parts and destroying it defeats Lavos.
After its defeat, the original timeline Lavos is cast into the Darkness Beyond Time, where it merges with Schala to become the Dream Devourer. This merged entity would later mature to become the Time Devourer, the true overarching threat of Chrono Cross as it sought to consume all of spacetime and thus end the multiverse. Balthasar manipulated events in such a way to allow for Searge and his friends to obtain the titular Chrono Cross and finally kill Lavos.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- It stands out as the most heinous threat in the entire franchise as its desire was to suck the life force out of entire planets, leaving nothing but desolation in its wake. When it had arrived on Earth, it had been catastrophic, truly leading to mass extinction through the annihilation of the sapient dinosaur race. The insidious nature of Lavos's influence means that it is not limited to simple, wanton destruction but also brings madness to those who would manipulate its power, such as Queen Zeal, whose downfall into insanity causes the fall of the Kingdom of Zeal. When it becomes the Time Devourer, it symbolizes the epitome of its evil and how it changes from a simple planet-destroying entity into a being that threatens not just one universe but many.
- It is the most influential villain to come out of a Chrono franchise, with it causing events such as:
- It manipulates entire civilizations, such as seen with the Kingdom of Zeal, where its power source, the Mammon Machine, corrupts Queen Zeal and drives her to unspeakable acts.
- Its effects on humanity went as far as the future, where it leaves Earth in ruins, forces humanity into survival mode, and produces Lavos Spawn to propagate its species.
- Even in its apparent defeat, its presence can be felt throughout the entire franchise as it still lived on through the Frozen Flame, which continued, over time, to shape human evolution and dictate the certain major events leading toward the creation of the Time Devourer.
- It's a highly intelligent and calculating entity that subtly influences the evolution of Earth over several millennia by embedding itself in the core to make sure of its eventual dominance. Lavos is deep into manipulation matters, like leading Queen Zeal into madness and indirectly controlling events on Earth with the Frozen Flame. Its final evolution into the Time Devourer, a being who understands and loathes life in all variables across the multiverse, speaks volumes about its advanced intellect and awareness, way beyond any simple life form.
- It is easily the most powerful villain Crono has ever faced as, as it was capable of destroy entire civilizations or take planets and render them lifeless. It almost destroyed all life on Earth when it awakened in 1999 AD, let alone its ability to manipulate time and space and exist in multiple forms across eras. The evolution to the Time Devourer elevates Lavos's power to a multiversal level, now seeking to purge not just one planet, but all life throughout an entire multiverse. In this sense, that Lavos can consume and merge with Schala to create an entity capable of erasing all of existence if allowed speaks highly for its near-godly power. Even in defeat, the might of Lavos would live on through the Frozen Flame, striving to warp and curve reality to its whim for ages to come.
- In summary, it proves to be a catalyst for much of the conflict and tragedy within the Chrono universe and shapes destinies through the course of generations.
