Light Yagami, also reputed as Kira or God, is the main protagonist of the Death Note franchise.
He was a high school student who found a special book called the "Death Note" in which he used to kill criminals. He initially used the Death Note to kill criminals and bring justice to the world, but his god complex eventually made his desire for justice to be an excuse to grab power. At the same time, Light Yagami is being tracked down by L Lawliet, who desired to have him captured to stop the latter's mass murdering spree.
In the Death Note anime, Light was voiced by Mamoru Miyano in the Japanese version, as well as Brad Swaile in the English dubbed version, who also voiced Yang Tu in Hero: 108.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- He kicked off the events of the series by using the Death Note to kill criminals across the globe in an attempt to become a god.
- He killed over 100,000 people with the Death Note which while it resulted in ending war and dropping crime by 70 percent, also stripped the world of its free will as even America submitted to him. He also murdered innocent people like FBI agents, Naomi, and L, making him the most heinous character in the series.
- While starting out with the good intention of stopping crimes, the absolute power of killing people gradually fueled his ego and corrupted his mind. His pursuit of justice is shifted into a desire of being worshiped as a god, to the extent that he actually sees himself as a god. At the end of the series, he loses all the redeeming qualities he once had, including his care about his family, making him the most irredeemably evil character in the series.
- While the anime adaptation gives him a sympathetic death, showing him remembering his life and wondering what could have been had he never found the Death Note, even seeing his younger, innocent self walking past him, and a vision of L welcoming him to his death and also frames him as having a twisted but sincere respect and emotional attachment towards L, missing him after he kills him, these mitigating factors are minor at best. To some extent, the sympathetic death is exactly pitying how fallen he has become in his desire to stop crime.
- However, the anime version of Light also was shown to have less remorse than the manga Light, who lost 10 pounds due to lack of sleep and food out of guilt after the first time he killed someone with the Death Note. In addition, his kills toward his victims were visibly more cruel, as shown with Aiber's death and even the rest of the Yotsuba Group. This implies that the anime Light, in spite of having a sympathetic moment, was even more evil than the manga Light despite the latter version was Pure Evil.
- He nearly won against Near had he not switched the Death Notes before the two had met at the warehouse.
- Even after his death, cults were formed to worship him, and his example prompted further Death Note users.
