Curious. Your friends appear to be quite desperate, Jack. Perhaps they no longer believe that a gathering of squabbling pirates can defeat the Flying Dutchman. And so despair leads to betrayal. And you and I are no strangers to betrayal, are we?
~ Beckett, taunting Jack over his crewmates falling into despair.

Lord Cutler Beckett is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Davy Jones) of the Pirates of the Carribean franchise.

He is the power-hungry, manipulative and ruthless governor of East India Trading Company, who seeks to use legendary Flying Dutchman crew to kill all pirates in the world.

He was portrayed by Tom Hollander.

Actions and Characteristics[]

  • He's in charge of East India Trading Company giving him the most men working under him, a huge military force of Great Britain with a large Armada, and his lack of physical attributes got compensated by his intelligence, becoming representative of King George himself. He also gets his hands on the heart of Davy Jones, using it to gain control over the most feared Pirate captain in the world for being the very equivalent of the grim reaper and using him and the Flying Dutchman to do his dirty work, making him the most powerful antagonist in the franchise.
  • He can be considered the film series' evilest antagonist, due to his goal of attempting to kill off every pirate in the world and anyone associated with them, as well as having no redeeming qualities nor comedic moments. While waging war against piracy was common in the 17th century, Beckett ordered thousands of people, including one child (as child murder was illegal even during this period), to be hanged for even the most minor accessories to piracy/associations with pirates.
  • He is the most influential antagonist of the franchise, calling Jack a pirate in addition to flooding the ship where he was loading slaves. Which makes Beckett indirectly responsible for Jack Sparrow selling his soul to Jones, causing their rivalry between the two, also causing the events of the original trilogy and being indirectly responsible for the last 2 installments, Jack's confrontation against Blackbeard and indirectly causing his reunion with Salazar and being indirectly responsible for Jones' resurrection, which is why Beckett becomes the most influence enemy of the film franchise.
  • Although he has a genuinely tragic backstory of growing up as a sickly child and had some care for his mother, he ends up subverting both of those qualities over time.
