“ | Such sad, sad faces. But now is a time only for joy. You are going to be part of something beautiful. Once we reach the harbor, in front of all the world, you and your precious Kung Fu will die. Then China will know to bow before me. Set sail! | ” |
~ Shen, explaining his goals to destroy Kung Fu and conquer China to the Furious Five. |
“ | Lord Shen: How did you find peace? I took away your parents, everything. I-I scarred you for life. Po: See that's the thing Shen, scars heal. Lord Shen: No they don't, wounds heal. Po: Oh yeah, what do scars do? They fade I guess? Lord Shen: I don't care what scars do. Po: You should Shen. You gotta let go of that stuff from the past cause it just doesn't matter. The only thing that matters, is what you choose to be now. Lord Shen: You're right, then I choose this! (attacks Po with blades) |

Lord Shen is the main antagonist of the Kung Fu Panda franchise.
He is an egotistical peacock who, in his paranoia to avoid his own destiny committed genocide on the entire panda species before usurping complete control over China. Believing he had changed his fate, Shen then dedicated his plan for the next two decades to taking control of China, having his Wolf army pillage villages of their metal so he could create fireball cannons that could destroy everything with ease, but he is soon reminded of his past when it turns out there were survivors of his genocide and one of them, Po is coming to put an end to his plans, leaving Shen feeling obsessed with putting an end to him.
He was voiced by Gary Oldman.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- He is the most influential villain in the entire quadrilogy, with him being the one to commit genocide on the entire panda species, leaving Po without his biological parents for over 2 decades and thus fuelling the events of the entire series.
- He is the most heinous villain in the movie series with him committing genocide on the panda species out of simple paranoia and enforcing a tyrannical rule over China that involved him killing Thundering Rhino and locking up Master Ox and Master Croc with him intending to cause mass destruction across China in his goal to rule it, giving him the highest scale of villainy in the movie series.
- He is one of the most powerful villains in the quadrilogy due to him having access to an entire army of resources as well as the whole of China, with the only character rivaling him being Kai the Collector. He is also a fairly skilled combatant, being able to defeat a whole group of guards with no effort and simultaneously take on two Kung-Fu masters, Master Ox and Master Croc and defeat them both. And he gave Po a tough time trying to defeat him due to using psychological tactics and strategy to defeat him, and it was only through Po having the help of the Soothsayer to overcome his past that he was finally able to put an end to Shen.
- He is shown to be incredibly intelligent, as seen by how he managed to dupe Master Thundering Rhino using a cannon he created and managed to psychologically break Po by lying to him about how his parents didn't love him in order to make him easier to kill and showing off his feathers to trigger a trauma response in order to make him lower his guard and be able to escape. He is also the villain that came the closest to succeeding in his goals and if not for the efforts of Po, no one would have been able to stop his plans for China, making him deadly in both mind and body.
- His actions are symbolic for the theme of Kung Fu Panda 2, which is letting go off the past because it doesn't matter. While Po was able to move on from the past and accept that it didn't matter in the current day, Shen allowed paranoia to consume him and it ultimately lead him taking a path in life that was self-destructive and would eventually lead to his death as he simply accepts his death after accidentally causing one of his own firework cannons to fall on him either out of the trauma of his past, or feeling like he had gone too far to redeem himself, making him a dark contrast to Po.
- Though he genuinely cares for the Soothsayer, this is a minor redeeming trait and doesn't detract from his villainy that much.
