“ | You think I was going to use my filthy Muggle father's name forever? I, in whose veins runs the blood of Salazar Slytherin himself, through my mother's side? I, keep the name of a foul, common Muggle, who abandoned me even before I was born, just because he found out his wife was a witch? No, Harry. I fashioned myself a new name, a name I knew wizards everywhere would one day fear to speak, when I had become the greatest sorcerer in the world! | ” |
~ Voldemort, explaining his life goal to Harry Potter in the Chamber of Secrets. |
Tom Marvolo Riddle, better known as Lord Voldemort, is the main antagonist of the Wizarding World franchise.
He is an evil dark wizard that committed several atrocities throughout the series that gave him the reputation as the most evil and feared Dark Lord in the entire Wizarding World. Despite his fearsome reputation, there was a prophecy that Voldemort would be defeated by a chosen one who would have the ability to put an end to him, that chosen one being Harry Potter himself. Voldemort attempted to change his destiny by murdering Harry when he was only a baby, but failed due to Harry's mother, Lily Potter putting a protection spell over Harry and reflecting Voldemort's killing curse back at him, fueling their rivalry that would last for the entire series.
He was portrayed by Ralph Fiennes.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- He's the most influential villain in both continuities as he was the one that directly caused the entire series in the first place by killing Harry's mother, father and trying to kill Harry to change his destiny, which would fuel the events of every installment after with Voldemort either having other villains help him get his body back or attempting to do it himself so he can fulfill his goal of killing Harry and taking over the Wizarding World. Almost every other villain in the series works under him too and after getting his body back, he would cause the death of multiple major characters, including the Ultimate Good of the series, Albus Dumbledore, adding to his already immense influence over the franchise.
- He’s the most heinous villain of the story, as not only did he plan to commit a three way genocide against muggles, half-bloods and muggle-borns and successfully caused two wizarding wars, he planned to take over the world and turn it into a fascist dictatorship where only the rich and powerful would be able to live comfortably, while everyone else would live in misery and be oppressed by Voldemort and his Death Eater allies. Additional acts are being Harry's most personally cruel enemy by murdering his parents and putting him through the wringer throughout the entire series and either successfully causing or attempting to cause the deaths of the entire main cast of the series, making him the greatest threat in the entire Wizarding World.
- He’s extremely powerful, as not only was he known as the most powerful Dark Lord to ever live and the second most powerful Wizard overall only behind Dumbledore himself, he knew and was able to perform many powerful spells like the killing curse. He also commanded a huge army of Death Eaters and surpassed even Gellert Grindelwald in power, who was the previous most powerful Dark Lord that caused the first Wizarding War, plus he was one of the few characters that wielded the Elder Wand, which was the most powerful wand in existence.
- He's highly intelligent as not only was he a prodigy as a teen that excelled in all his classes at Hogwarts, he successfully manipulated countless people into joining his cause and using them as tools for his own benefit to kill off once they outlived their usefulness. Other examples of his intelligence include him successfully framing Hagrid for opening the Chamber of Secrets, continuously finding ways to bring himself back to life after he is defeated and successfully predicting his enemies methods of attack to stay one step ahead of them and lure them into traps.
- He is symbolic for one of the three Deathly Hallows, the first one specifically, which was desiring power for evil intentions. Voldemort desired power and immortality so badly that he was willing to go to desperate lengths to achieve it even if it meant murdering innocent people to do so, but pursuing a selfish life such as this was what lead to him dying earlier then what would have been intended otherwise as if he had never given into his fear of death and accepted his mortality, he could have lived a long life just like Dumbledore and became a very successful Wizard.
