The Ultimate Evil Wiki

Listen up folks, we got a way of doin' things here at Sunnyside. If you start at the bottom, pay your dues, life here can be a dream come true. But if you break our rules, step outta line, try to check out early, well, you're just hurtin' yourselves.
~ Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear laying out his cruel rules at Sunnyside Daycare.
I didn't throw you away, your kid did! Ain't one kid ever loved a toy really! Chew on that when you're at the dump.
~ Lotso's monologue as the garbage truck approaches.

Lots-o'-Huggin'-Bear is the main antagonist of Toy Story 3.

He is a talking teddy bear who, after accidentally being abandoned by Daisy, would become a spiteful tyrant who believed that all toys deserved to be thrown away, going as far as to actively abuse and imprison the other toys in Sunnyside Daycare and even being willing to kill anyone who dared try and defy his order.

He was voiced by the late Ned Beatty, who also voiced tortoise john from Rango.

Actions and Characteristics[]

  • He is by far the most heinous character in the entire Toy Story franchise, as his abandonment of Andy's toys to die at the incinerator is the only action in any of the four films to pass the baseline, with Sid Phillips, Stinky Pete, Al McWhiggin, Emperor Zurg, and Gabby Gabby having nothing remotely resembling a Moral Event Horizon, and all those characters have redeeming qualities.
  • He is the most powerful character in the series, having access to an entire Daycare full of resources, putting him on par with Al.
  • He's shown to be rather intelligent and manipulative, with him introducing himself as a benevolent figure who simply wanted to help toys as opposed to abusing them despite being the exact opposite, not to mention how he tricks Woody and Buzz into rescuing him from the landfill's large shredding mechanism only to sadistically abandon them to be burned by the incinerator immediately after getting himself to safety.
  • While many villains in the franchise have shown some form of sympathy or care for others, Lotso has shown no care for anybody but himself, being a cruel Bad Boss to his own minions, which caused them to only follow him out of fear and turned against him once they realize his truly cruel nature. While he does have a tragic backstory of being accidentally abandoned, he merely uses it as an excuse for his actions and his lies (as Woody points out, it doesn’t justify a single one of his actions). He also subverted his redeeming qualities by dispensing all care he had for his fellow toys and Daisy after he was abandoned.
  • Even besides his lack of care for others and sympathy, he’s the only one of the four main antagonists to have absolutely zero redeeming qualities or comedic moments at all, even Sid Phillips shows some respect and care for his dog Scud and has lots of comedic moments, which detract from his villainy. But even if Lotso does have comedic moments after his true nature his revealed, they don’t detract from his heinousness and are only funny to the audience.
  • Out of every villain the entire series, Lotso is the only one who ever came close to straight up killing the main characters, via abandoning them to be burned alive by the incinerator. Even the Prospector intended for Geri to fix Woody despite wanting him to go to Japan in pieces.
  • While he only appeared in only one movie, he left the most impact and influence by showing Andy's toys a different perspective. That not every kid is like Andy who took good care of his toys, this even led to Woody realizing that once kids grow up they become less interested in toys (although Stinky Pete talked to him about that years prior), which is why he wrote the note to donate his toys.
  • Unlike most villains in the Toy Story franchise, Lotso completely sheds any redeeming qualities he had and easily passes the baseline.
