~ Magnus taunting Sunny over the destruction of Azra. |
Magnus is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Dante) of the AMC series Into the Badlands.
He is the leader of the ancient cult known as the Black Lotus. Having been the one who led the invasion of Azra, Magnus is responsible for Sunny ending up in the Armadillo Territory, Pilgrim becoming a false messiah, and perhaps worst of all Magnus personally tortured Kannin until she became a mindless killer loyal to the Black Lotus, with their ultimate goal being to rid the world of Dark Ones.
He was portrayed by Francis Magee. His younger self was portrayed by Fergus Mulligan.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- Magnus is easily the most heinous antagonist, as while the rest of the Black Lotus kill Dark Ones in order to protect the world, Magnus kills people out of sadism, regardless of if they have the Gift. This is best seen in his relationship with Ankara, as he goes out of his way to taunt her for having manipulated her in the past rather than just killing her outright. Furthermore, he is an ephebophilic rapist, having brainwashed and raped Kannin for years in order to turn her into a weapon loyal to the Black Lotus, despite other members being against this due to her being a Dark One. He is also one of two characters to commit sexual assault on-screen, as he is shown kissing Kannin on at least one occasion.
- Due to him being the one who led the invasion of Azra, he is indirectly responsible for the main series conflict of Sunny being raised as a Clipper in the Badlands and Pilgrim becoming a violent false messiah. Even during Pilgrim's conquest for the entire world, Magnus still refuses to work with the main characters and continues to try and have them killed.
- Magnus is shown to be the most powerful warrior in the show, as he is the only person without the Gift that could defeat Sunny in a fight. Up to that point in the series, the only time Sunny could be beaten by a non-Gifted warrior is if he was already injured, but Magnus put him on the defensive and would have won had Kannin not showed up to aid Sunny in battle. While Magnus does not have the Gift, he was shown to be a master of the pressure point technique that deactivates the Gift, which he used to instantly overpower Ankara, a master of the Gift, proving that Magnus is the most skilled individual in the series.
- Magnus has the most resources out of any character, as he is the commander of the Black Lotus, an organization that exists in both the Badlands and the Outlands. While other antagonists such as Quinn or Baron Chau are shown to have powerful Clipper forces, the members of the Black Lotus are easily the strongest mercenary force as they have specialized training and weaponry that can even overpower and kill Dark Ones.
