Montgomery "Monty" de la Cruz is the secondary antagonist of the 13 Reasons Why Netflix series. He is a jock at Liberty High School and right-hand of serial rapist, Bryce Walker.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- Despite technically being the secondary antagonist of the series, he proves himself to be a greater evil than both the main antagonist (Bryce Walker) and the overarching antagonist (Rick Wlodimierz) in multiple ways, even with his lesser resources.
- He is slightly more heinous than Bryce as while Bryce is directly responsible for Hannah's suicide and many other people’s hardships due to his serial rapes, Monty goes far and beyond to cover up his crimes and silence his victims by blackmailing and/or threatening every single student to the point he can't be considered an average (Monty also witnessed the rape of Hannah and let it happen, making him almost as responsible as Bryce). It reaches the point where Bryce never asked him to do these acts and believes he is going too far (though for pragmatic reasons).
- His infamous scene of raping of Tyler with a broom handle is especially brutal and marks the darkest moment in the show. This would lead to Tyler trying to shoot up the school which would make Monty indirectly responsible for 100 deaths. Even though Tyler did not go through with this, a large portion of Season 3 is spent having Tyler try to overcome his trauma from this rape. This even reaches the point where Bryce himself is disgusted by this and threatens to stop Monty.
- Even ignoring the rape, he has way more crimes than Bryce as he has repeated rape as practically his only crime while Monty has committed much more varying MEHs such as taunting the Baker family about their dead daughter, trying to kill Clay by running him over with Bryce's car, trying to have Alex commit suicide, mocking a rape victim with a sex doll and multiple other nasty crimes.
- He is the most influential villain in the series as while starting off as a generic bully and minor character in Season 1, he is revealed to be far more important than he seems later on. While Bryce is the Big Bad of Seasons 1 and 2, Monty himself is the main antagonist of Season 3 and continues to influence Season 4 after his death as his ghost continues to haunt Clay while other jocks seek to avenge Monty (while Bryce's ghost appears too, it isn't as often, and he isn't as influential.)
- He stands out as the most irredeemably evil character as while he does get mild sympathy in later portrayals, unlike Bryce, he never shows any remorse for his actions, nor do he ever try to redeem himself. He has always been the most notably sadistic and vicious character by committing crimes that completely nullify his horrible childhood from counting him as tragic.
