The priestess of wisdom and the hero. I see you intend to interfere. How vexing. Then again, you've come here and brought the Prime Energy directly to me... The goddesses- they have taken everything from me. Now I will use their power to take it all back!
~ Null

Null is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Demise) of Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda franchise, serving as the main antagonist of the 2024 action-adventure game The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

It is a dark, ancient, and nihilistic cosmic being that once resided in the void before the creation of the world. In this empty expanse, it consumed anything that dared to emerge, causing constant chaos and destruction out of the desire to return all of existence to nothingness. In response, the Golden Goddesses—the divine creators of Hyrule—sealed it beneath the land, imprisoning it for millennia to prevent its destructive influence from consuming the world.

Thousands of years later, after the defeat of Ganon, it was inadvertently released, its power growing once more. Returning with a singular purpose, it seeks to ensure that it is the only thing left in existence—its ultimate goal being the eradication of everything and the restoration of the creation to the nothingness from which it came. To accomplish this, it possessing countless beings across Hyrule and corrupting them to do its bidding, where it create rifts—vortexes that tear through reality, distorting time and space, and opening pathways to other timelines. These rifts plague Hyrule, consuming everything in their path, and are the true source of the corruption and monstrous creatures that threaten the land.

It is the true origin of the rifts, which serve as the conduits for its influence, allowing it to spread its chaos far and wide. Its existence has left an indelible mark on the world, twisting both the landscape and the people of Hyrule, as it continues to strive toward its cataclysmic goal.

Actions and Characteristics[]

  • It stands as the most heinous and vile creature in the entire Legend of Zelda series. Unlike other Zelda villains who seek power, domination, or revenge, Null’s sole motivation is the annihilation of all life and creation. It is a being driven by a bottomless hunger for destruction, seeking to consume all existence and reduce the world to an unending void. Its heinousness is unparalleled, as it curses its victims to fates worse than death, trapping them in the Still World—a place of eternal torment. Null takes pleasure in its chaos, relishing the anguish it inflicts. Unlike even the darkest of Zelda’s villains, such as Zant, Yuga or Demise, Null has no redeeming qualities or nuanced desires—it exists purely to destroy and consume.
  • It is the most influential villain to come out of the franchise because its existence directly influenced the creation of Hyrule and the role of every Zelda villain after that. Long before the events of the current timeline, the Golden Goddesses themselves had created the planet known as the Light World specifically to contain Null, stopping its destructive spread across the void. That would make Null the very reason for Hyrule's existence, including the later rise of Demise and the countless wars that follow. Its rifts and creations, like shadowy echoes and monstrous entities, have brought ruin upon Hyrule, extending to every corner of the land, and have imprisoned hundreds of beings, including those closest to Zelda, in a dark world.
  • It is the most powerful being that Link has ever faced, for its power is ancient and seemingly limitless, rooted in the Primordial Chaos that predates the entire Zelda universe. As a being of primordial void, Null is constrained by neither mortal nor magical constraints; it can tear open space, create cataclysmic Echoes of figures like Ganon, and ultimately corrupt Hyrule on a massive scale. It's so powerful that the Golden Goddesses had to create an entire planet just to lock it in, and its attempts to break out have repeatedly threatened the world with destruction. The lynchpin of this is its apparent ability to manipulate Prime Energy (the Triforce) for itself, being well beyond the capabilities of most Zelda villains.
  • While Null's hunger is primal, it is not a mindless entity. It boasts great intelligence and cunning, having been able to lay complex traps for Link and Zelda, manipulate events in Hyrule, and even use Echoes—shadowy duplicates—to mislead, capture, or cause chaos. The greatest extent of Null's intellect, however, would have to be its long-term planning and tactical maneuvers—for instance, replacing key people with Echoes in order to manipulate situations that place Zelda in precarious conditions, framing her for the crimes in order to weaken Hyrule from within. It even planned around Zelda's efforts to curry favor with the Goddesses, predicting and exploiting her actions in furtherance of its own goal of obtaining the Triforce.
