Oh Il-nam, also referred to as The Host or Player 001, is the overarching antagonist of the South Korean Netflix Drama Squid Game. He seems like an ordinary old man and a player, it seemed like he didn't fully grasp the game situation, however Il-nam was the true mastermind behind the game and has been hosting it for decades.
He was portrayed by Oh Young-su.
Characteristics and Actions[]
- He is the main runner of the Squid Game, being responsible for the deaths of over 15,000 people over 33 years in South Korea, and is also responsible for the survivors being extremely traumatized, including Hwang In-ho, who became the next Front Man.
- While it is true that there are multiple other games held in different counties, Il-nam was the one who founded the Games in the first place, making him the series most influential and heinous villain.
- Even before becoming the runner of the games, he was an extremely wealthy financial tycoon and loan shark, in which he used all his resources to fund and manage the games, having massive amounts of electronic and intricate technology throughout the games.
- Despite his death in the first season, his influence is still felt throughout the series, with the Front Man and the VIP's still continuing the games in his memory and it being implied that Seong Gi-hun is going to try and stop the Squid Game to prevent anymore deaths.
