| “ | Oh, Ivo… you're no Maria. The moment I lost her, my family was gone forever! The only way to give Maria's life meaning is to destroy the world that took her from me. SO I'M BURNING IT ALL DOWN!! | ” |
| ~ Gerald explains to his grandson his true motivation to destroy the planet. |
Professor Gerald Robotnik is the main antagonist of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the third main installment of the Sonic Cinematic Universe.
He is the grandfather of Dr. Ivo Robotnik and Maria who had worked at the Guardian Units of Nations decades ago, studying Project Shadow, hoping he would be a great achievement in the future. However, after G.U.N. issued a warrant for his arrest, Maria would be killed in an explosion, caused by a soldier firing at a tank. Vengeful, Gerald would break out of his prison and free Shadow, intending to get his hands on the very weapon he designed for G.U.N., the Eclipse. Not only did Gerald intend to use it to take his vengeance on G.U.N., but he'd also intend to use it to destroy humanity in a spiteful suicide, consumed by the grief of losing his granddaughter.
He was portrayed by Jim Carrey.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- While his influence isn't as major as the Unnamed Echidna Warrior (who was indirectly responsible for the events of the first two films thanks to their actions), he does still play a major influence in Shadow's story along with G.U.N. Not to mention, he is also the mastermind behind everything that takes place in the third film, to which he created the Eclipse Cannon, freed Shadow from the facility he was being held captive, killed Commander Walters with Ivo's hacked Badniks, and used Shadow and Ivo to help him destroy Earth. Plus, he is also both a personal villain to both Shadow and Robotnik.
- Despite his genuine tragedy of losing his granddaughter Maria and wanting to avenge her, Gerald does manage to twist it to manipulate Shadow into helping him with his overall scheme and outright admits he truly doesn't care what Maria would have thought about destroying humanity, wanting them to suffer regardless. He also, unlike his original counterpart, isn't too much of an honorable scapegoat, lacking a majority of his other redeeming qualities and becoming more of a vengeful madman who just cares about destruction. This makes his tragedy and care for Maria not too preventing from being the Ultimate Evil.
- He has proven himself to likely be the smartest villain in the series so far, even more than his grandson who was self-proclaimed to be the world's smartest man. He outsmarts his foes and plans a grand scheme to destroy the entire planet carefully over the course of half a century and easily manages to trick his grandson and manipulate Shadow, both of whom are rather smart in their own right.
- While a majority of villains in the Sonic Cinematic Universe end up having major redeeming factors, Gerald ends up being one of the few exceptions as his only true redeeming trait is caring for his late granddaughter, Maria. Overall, Gerald is just a scientist whose vengeful motives have turned him mad, wanting nothing more than to serve his own selfish ambitions.
- He ends up serving as a bit of a dark parallel to several major characters in the trilogy; he has somebody he loved dearly in the past taken away from him, which obviously still bothers him to this day, much like Sonic and Shadow. He becomes motivated to avenge them, like Knuckles and Shadow, and ultimately ends up pinning the blame on the wrong person. However, unlike Shadow, Gerald never ends up accepting Maria's death and dies wanting to destroy the world, seeing it as deserved for taking Maria away from him.
- He is easily the most dangerous, destructive, heinous, and therefore, evil villain within the Sonic Cinematic Universe, planning to wipe out all of humanity with himself included through the Eclipse Cannon, which is something no other villain has attempted to do within the series so far. Even the Unnamed Echidna Warrior whose powers are stated to be a threat to all life in the universe didn't go so far, as he only used the Master Emerald to wipe out entire armies.
- While he may not physically be the most powerful villain within the series, he has Shadow as his pawn for a majority of the film, who has incredible power even without the Master Emerald. It helps that Gerald is responsible for the creation of the Eclipse Cannon, which is easily the most destructive weapon in the Sonic Cinematic Universe since it was designed to potentially endanger millions. It also helps that by having Shadow power the machine up, it becomes a global threat.

Trivia[]
- Although he's TUE now, this could be changed once new movies come out, seeing as there are threats more dangerous than him, which is highly possible considering the countless horrible foe's in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise (Black Doom, Mephiles, The End, Eggman Nega, Zavok, Emperor Metallix, Lyric, etc.). Also, since the SCU isn't afraid to create original characters not from Sonic, they could create an original villain that is also more dangerous than Gerald.
