“ | Ohhh yes! A dream! I like that. Dreams are places you can have fun, right? It's all in your mind, so why not enjoy it? | ” |
~ Ryuk. |
“ | Humans are so... interesting. | ” |
~ Ryuk's last words, also the final line in the movie. |
Ryuk is the overarching antagonist of the 2017 Netflix original supernatural crime thriller film Death Note, which is very loosely based on the Japanese manga and anime series of the same name by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.
He is a Shinigami death god who seeks to deliver the Death Note to a new owner, then stay to watch what happens, as in the case of Light Turner, who comes into possession of the Death Note during the film. As opposed to his original incarnation, which served more as comic relief, this version is much more sadistic and takes pleasure in the death and mayhem he causes and portrayed dead seriously.
He was portrayed by Willem Dafoe.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- This version of Ryuk is completely devoid of the comedic moments and redeeming qualities of his original self, being ruthless and willing to do anything to cause nonstop chaos and despair and, unlike Light Turner, without no good reason at all, just to satisfy his sadism.
- He was the most heinous character in the film as he incited Light Turner to use the Death Note to kill criminals.
- He was the most influential character as he gave Light the Death Note thus giving him responsibility for all his crimes, as unlike him manga and anime counterpart.
- He had high resources as he was a Shinigami Death God, and a Death Note that could kill anyone if their name was written on it.
- The lack of the mention of the Shinigami King makes him stand out more in this film.
