The Beldam, otherwise known as the Other Mother, is the main antagonist of the 2005 novella Coraline written by Neil Gaiman and its many adaptations in particular the stopmotion animated film released in 2009.
She was voiced by Teri Hatcher.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- The Beldam is the evillest character in the novella and its adaptations. Using the little doll to see into the real world, she lures children in giving them everything they wanted until she tells them they could stay in the Other World forever if they allow her to sew buttons over their eyes. If they agreed, she would then murder them and feed on their souls (according to the film adaptation, at the least). The Beldam had claimed the lives of three human children and fed on their life forces until Coraline Jones' arrival. She tortures and abuses her creations when they try to assist Coraline.
- The Beldam has near-omnipotent power over the Other World and is capable of altering the world to her liking. However, she can only recreate things that already exist rather than out of scratch.
- She is the reason why no children were allowed at the Pink Palace Apartments being the kidnapper of the twin sister of Wybie's grandmother.
- The Beldam is very charismatic and manipulative at first alongside fashioning the Other World in a way her victims would appreciate before sealing the deal by sewing buttons over their eyes. She nearly manipulates Coraline herself only failing with Coraline's refusal to have the buttons sewn.
