| “ | Did you truly think you could defeat me? Your powers were a gift from me! It was I who possessed the serpent that bit your hand! It was I who corrupted the Great Devourer and sent him against you! [...] All that has happened was by MY design! The Devourer was merely a pawn... Set in motion by me to provide a worthy vessel for my return! Now, at last, I have such a vessel! I am COMPLETE! Thus does Garmadon, son of the First Spinjitzu Master, meet his end! | ” |
| ~ The Overlord spitefully revealing to Lloyd, Garmadon and Harumi that he was the one who corrupted the Great Devourer and thus responsible for everything that occurred up to that point. |
The Overlord is the overarching antagonist of LEGO's Ninjago.
He is a primordial spirit who is the source of evil and embodiment darkness in the land of Ninjago. He desires to plunge all of Ninjago into darkness so that he can rule over it. He wants to destroy the balance between light and dark so that he can bring Ninjago "peace" under the darkness.
He is voiced by Scott McNeil.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- The Overlord is undoubtedly the most powerful villain the Ninja had ever faced.
- Since he is the source of all darkness in Ninjago and represents the malevolent part of the balance, he (as an entity) can never be destroyed.
- During his battle with the First Spinjitzu Master, he created an army of indestructible warriors, the Stone Army. The First Spinjitzu Master chose to divide the island in two.
- He is the most influential villain in the series, since he corrupted a small viper that would transform into the Great Devourer, which led to the viper turning Garmadon into Lord Garmadon before it transformed. The day the Great Devourer attacked Ninjago City while the Ninja had to stop it, it led to the death of Harumi’s parents, turning Harumi into a delusional criminal who blamed the Ninja for the loss of her parents and believed that Garmadon is the hero Ninjago deserves.
- In season 2, Legacy of the Green Ninja, he manipulated Garmadon into joining forces with him, build a powerful weapon to conquer Ninjago, and cause a shift in the balance.
- After he was free, he possessed Garmadon and managed to overpower Lloyd, the Green Ninja and the First Spinjitzu Master’s grand son. Lloyd was sadly defeated with a broken leg.
- He, along with his Stone Army traveled to Ninjago City while leaving the Ninja stranded on the Dark Island, and caused mass corruption and spread darkness.
- When he transformed into his original form of a dragon, he fought before. Until Lloyd transformed into the Ultimate Spinjitzu Master and defeated him.
- In season 3, Rebooted, he came back as a digital virus and took control of Borg Tower. With the help of former Anacondrai general Pythor P. Chumsworth and an army of robotic ninjas known as Nindroids, the Overlord concocts a new plot for conquest by obtaining the power of the Golden Weapons for himself.
- He successfully got the Golden Weapons after sending the Nindroids to outer space. And then he created a powerful armor after melting the Golden Weapons and became the Golden Master. Then he started attacking Ninjago City again, until Zane, the Ice Ninja and good Nindroid, sacrificed himself to save everyone before rebuilding himself.
- The Overlord survived his defeat and spent the next few years in hiding, witnessing the major events of Ninjago’s history, until was it was finally time to enact his revenge
- After Harumi died at the hands of the Colossus, and while the Ninja fought the beast while Master Wu and Lloyd fought the resurrected Lord Garmadon, he found her and offers to revive her if she served him, manipulating her into returning to her evil ways. While he seemed polite to Harumi, it is noted that he’s only using her as a pawn the same way he was using Garmadon. He immediately begins to manipulate her once again by admitting that he wants to bring peace by destroying the balance instead of destroying Ninjago.
- He ordered her to build an army out of Vengestone in order to weaken the Ninja, preventing them from stopping his evil plans. That resulted in causing the events of season 13, Master of the Mountain as Harumi would buy Vengestone from Vangelis.
- He recruited several of the Ninja’s enemies (Pythor, Aspheera, Vangelis, the Mechanic, and Mister F) to become his council members and lead the Vengestone Army, helping his plans of destroying the balance between light and dark. He gifted the council members with newfound powers, making them stronger and more dangerous.
- He tries to convince Lloyd into joining him, it was most likely due to the Overlord knowing how powerful he truly was. It was likely that he not only saw Lloyd as a tool but he also wanted to make sure he didn’t stand his way. He threatened to kill him if he refused.
- He started invading Ninjago again, unleashing his Vengestone army so that they can help him with his conquest and destroy the Ninja. The Vengestone soldiers started attacking an entire village and then Ninjago City, corrupting multiple people into becoming the Overlord’s crystal zombies.
- He easily overpowered Master Wu and then he sends a powerful blast from his flying temple down onto Ninjago City, crystalizing it entirely.
- The Overlord’s relationship with the council isn’t genuine, since he only views them as tools for his destructive plans.
- Upon being attacked by Lloyd and Garmadon, he transformed into a giant centaur and fought back. He electrocuted them while revealing that he was mostly responsible for every event in the series, including the attack of the Great Devourer, which drove an angry Harumi to finally turn against him.
- Despite the combined efforts of Lloyd, Garmadon and Harumi, he managed to beat them in combat before firing up the main crystal for his true plot to corrupt the powers of Creation. He successfully petrified all life in Ninjago (including Wu, the Ninja, their allies and families and former enemies), condemning them all to be crystalized. He showed no concern over the defeat of his council members as he subjects them to the same fate as well, implying that he was only using them as pawns to ensure the success of his plot.
- He was about to spitefully kill Harumi before Lloyd successfully defeated him once and for all with the help of the Golden Weapons that transformed into the Golden Ultra Dragon after the Ninja successfully sacrificed the weapons.
Trivia[]
- Incidentally, Wu refers to the Overlord as "the ultimate evil" the first time he is mentioned in the series.
