William "Wild Bill" Wharton is the main antagonist of the 1999 adaptation of The Green Mile created by Stephen King.
He is a sadistic serial killing rapist who had previously raped and murdered two little girls, with the pure hearted John Coffey winding up being wrongly convicted for the crime. However, he would eventually reach his comeuppance when he is shot to death by Percy Wetmore while awaiting the death penalty.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- He is easily the most heinous and evil character in the film, with him having raped and killed two little girls for pleasure, which is the thing that kicked off the entire main plot of the film as well as killing three people off screen, including a pregnant woman, which is what landed him on Death Row. He also lacks any redeeming qualities compared to Delacroix and arguably Percy, who felt remorse for his crimes in Delacroix's case and showed some care for Paul. And Percy's case, who likely had standards against Wharton being a pedophilic rapist.
- He has a high level of influence as it was him raping and murdering the two little girls and John Coffey being wrongfully convicted of the crime that set the events of the entire film into motion.
- He is shown to be quite strong, being able to kill three people during an armed robbery single handedly and take on three guards all at once, even nearly killing one of them by strangling them to death. He was also strong enough to overpower Percy Wetmore and pin him up against his cell for him to sexually assault, only being stopped as the other guards held him at gunpoint and forced him to let Wetmore go.
- He is shown to be relatively intelligent, as his introductory scene had him manipulating the other officers into a false sense of security, before attacking and choking one of the guards and using him as a meat shield when Paul Edgecomb tried to shoot him. This intelligence is also shown by the fact that he had managed to rape and kill the two little girls without anybody except for the main protagonists finding out.
- Finally, Wild Bill stands out due to the film not existing in the same universe as Stephen King's other works unlike the novel.
