Yomi Hellsmile is the secondary antagonist of the 2023 adventure game Master Detective Archives: Rain Code.
He is the director of the Amaterasu Corporation Peacekeepers, also meaning he is forced to submit to CEO Makoto Kagutsuchi to his disdain, and the enforcer of what qualifies as law in Kanai Ward. In reality, Yomi is a corrupt, malicious and loathsome individual who couldn't care less about law or justice despite preaching such and is willing to destroy the lives of others to get ahead in life, holding no compassion for anyone or anything before him.
His means of getting into power prior to the story was trading with outside military sources, allowing him to use coercion to stay in control while remaining immune to any legitimate punishment for his corruption and abuse of others. He is the arch-nemesis of Yakou Furio, chief of the Nocturnal Detective Agency.
He is voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka in Japanese and Howard Wang in English.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- While Makoto Kagutsuchi helped to develop the company after denying Yomi Hellsmile the opportunity to become CEO of Amaterasu Corporation, in truth, Yomi is the initial reason that Amaterasu even had an opportunity to develop and consume Kanai Ward at all as he made deals with Dr. Huesca and silenced anyone who dared to cross him before the homunculus experiment that would lead to Makoto taking charge instead.
- Makoto spends his time residing in Kanai Tower despite being the main antagonist of the story, meaning that Yomi's Peacekeepers cause all of the physical conflict for the detectives (especially Yuma Kokohead) on Makoto's behalf while they investigate Kanai Ward's Ultimate Secret and Yomi has the most physical presence. Makoto starts the plot off by luring the detectives to Kanai Ward to begin with, and even triggers Chapter 4's case by introducing Yakou Furio to Fink the Slaughter Artist to aid in Yakou's murder of Dr. Huesca, but he not only did that for the purpose of protecting Kanai Ward, he ends up regretting doing that later on when Yuma redeems him at the end of the game, unlike Yomi, who only antagonizes the detectives based on a false sense of justice and nothing else, not even being willing to reason with people, enemy or ally. Actually, Yomi's allies attempting to kill the detectives over and over again (Amaterasu's head researcher included retroactively as he also tried to kill the detectives as part of his escape plan due to being one of his allies as well) is what drives the conflict for the game up to Chapter 4.
- He is shown to be the most irredeemable character in the story in general and really doesn't care about anyone else or regret anything he does, let alone have good intentions behind his actions. Chapter 4's plot is the point when he acts at his most detestable as he only drove Yakou Furio into killing Dr. Huesca because Huesca betrayed him and planned to flee the company following their cooperation together and had no extremist or altruistic motives behind it whatsoever. Unlike Makoto, he also never redeems himself by the end of the game and does the opposite, instead planning to essentially kill anyone who opposed him that he failed to kill before, meaning that he remains a threat to everyone and never learns why his actions are wrong. This would make it likely for him to become a recurring threat were he not forced to stay in Kanai Ward due to his flaws as a defective homunculus and the fact that Makoto would likely never show him mercy and let him outside of Kanai Ward due to being too dangerous of a person, even as a clone who no longer has power as an Amaterasu Corporation agent.
- Makoto reveals that Yomi is the real reason that the detectives were in Kanai Ward as Makoto needed to eliminate him before he could leak any information on the presence of homunculi in Kanai Ward to the world, which would encourage the Unified Government to act. Alternatively, Yomi was possibly too unruly for him to control and using the detectives as pawns was the only option he could think of, even if how he removed him from Amaterasu Corporation was extremely immoral. Either way, despite Makoto being the main antagonist of the game, Yomi is still his real motive for causing everything in the game to happen by luring the detectives over to Kanai Ward to begin with.
- Considering that the creation of Number One's homunculus, Makoto Kagutsuchi, by the Unified Government is the reason for him and Dr. Huesca creating the defective homunculi that killed and replaced all of Kanai Ward's residents in the first place, this doesn't make Makoto influential enough in regards to that event as the two of them willingly chose to do that solely for their own egos and have zero excuses for doing so. Even if their manslaughter was also an accident, they should have expected something as extreme as that would occur, especially upon rushing to catch up out of panic. However, out of both Dr. Huesca and Yomi, their accident would be considered a mere setback by Yomi more than Huesca, as the human counterpart of Yomi evidently didn't care to inform anyone of the fact that the homunculi created from Kanai Ward's residents came out defective before dying during the Blank Week.
- Overall, despite Makoto Kagutsuchi fundamentally being the main antagonist of the game who hides the disturbing results of Amaterasu Corporation's unethical homunculus research project from the outside world for his own malevolent purposes, those results of which were partially influenced by Makoto's own existence, the plot of the game largely revolves around Yomi Hellsmile's corruption and relationship with Dr. Huesca and the Unified Government instead, with Makoto even outright stating to Yuma in the most misguided possible way that he's attempting to fix Kanai Ward because of the many negative outcomes of Yomi's corrupt ideals rather than those of Makoto's.
